As the authorities finally decide to lift the UK airspace ban at 10 PM there is confusion and anger in the airline industry with British Airways for one suggesting that the lockdown and grounding of all airlines in and around Europe was overdone. British Airways is not the first company to step forward to complain about the lockdown as a number of prominent airlines around the world have undertaken their own test flights which have on the main comeback to suggest the air is clear and perfectly safe for the vast majority of flights.
However, it has to be said this is a very difficult situation for the UK government and European counterparts because passenger safety must be paramount and no risks can be seen to have been taken. It will be interesting to see how the authorities respond to compensation claims by British Airways and other European airlines because ultimately compensation claims could be seen to be recognition of mistakes by the authorities.
Whether or not the situation was over-baked by the authorities is debatable but there is no doubt the ban on air travel in Europe and in other areas of the world has had a massive impact upon local and global economies.
